Register with HMRC

If you earn more than £1,000 in a tax year from self-employment (the trading allowance), you need to register for Self Assessment. Do it by 5 October after the end of the tax year you started.

Key Self Assessment dates

  • 5 April: end of the tax year
  • 5 October: deadline to register
  • 31 January: online return due and tax paid
  • 31 July: second payment on account, if applicable

How much to keep aside

You pay Income Tax and Class 4 National Insurance on profit. A common rule of thumb is to keep 25–30% of profit aside until you know your real figure.

Allowable expenses

  • Agency commission
  • Outfits, props and equipment used for content
  • Phone and internet (business share)
  • Software and editing apps

VAT

If your turnover passes the VAT registration threshold (£90,000 over a rolling 12 months) you’ll need to register. Get advice early if you’re close.
