Contract checklist

What to check before you sign.

A management contract should protect you as much as the agency. Here are the clauses that matter, in plain English.

Term and notice

  • Fixed term stated clearly (be wary of anything over 12 months)
  • Notice period you can live with, typically 30 days
  • No automatic renewal without your agreement

Account ownership and access

  • The account is registered in your name with your ID
  • You keep full login access at all times
  • Passwords are returned or reset when you leave
  • No claim over your persona name after you leave

Payments

  • Commission percentage and whether it’s on gross or net
  • Payouts go to your bank account, not theirs
  • When and how the agency invoices you
  • No upfront, setup or “training” fees
  • Any other costs listed explicitly

Content and boundaries

  • Your boundaries written into the agreement
  • Content ownership stays with you
  • What happens to unreleased content if you leave

Exit

  • What happens to ongoing commission after you leave
  • No penalties for leaving at the end of notice
  • A clean handover of social accounts built for you

This checklist is general guidance, not legal advice. If a contract worries you, a UK solicitor can review it for a modest fixed fee.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is a verbal agreement enough? +
No. Get the key terms in writing, even if short.
Can an agency stop me leaving? +
